Childhood and youth

The future striker was born in Chambéry, France on 30 September 1986. Shortly after Olivier's birth, the family moved to Forges. Like most boys, Giroud enjoyed kicking a ball around in the yard since childhood. Recognizing his passion for sports, his parents enrolled him in the local football club "Olympique Forges" (also known as "Froges").

The teenager spent 5 years in the youth team, and about to turn 13, Olivier Giroud joined the youth academy of the professional club Grenoble.

Soccer club

Olivier's serious football career began at the age of 19. He made his professional debut in March 2006, but struggled to secure a regular place in the starting line-up. In 2007, Grenoble loaned him to Istres, and at the end of the season, he was sold to Tours FC. Among his new teammates, he quickly established himself as a true professional, contributing to the team's success in 24 of the 44 matches he played. Giroud's career progressed gradually. In 2010, he signed a contract with Montpellier. In his first match against Dijon, he scored a goal that secured the victory for his new team. A year later, the French striker moved to England. Chelsea and Arsenal were both interested in having him in their team, but an agreement was reached with the latter. His new contract commits him to the team for four years. Giroud's arrival was met with scepticism due to his style of play, which differed from that of most strikers. He focused on specific areas rather than playing across the width of the pitch, which allowed him to exploit gaps between the opposition lines but was unfamiliar to supporters.

In 2014, Giroud signed various commercial sponsorship deals in addition to his football commitments. Before that, he had only endorsed Puma sportswear. Now, his face adorned posters promoting Hugo Boss perfumes and Carlsberg beer. That same year, Giroud suffered a serious injury. In a match against Everton, he injured his ankle. Initial on-field tests suggested a fracture, and further investigations confirmed the diagnosis. Medical experts predicted a 10-week absence from the team, but Giroud managed to recover more quickly. However, the Arsenal manager decided not to field him to avoid making the situation worse. In early 2017, Giroud scored a memorable goal known as the "scorpion kick" in a match against Crystal Palace, which was voted the best goal of the year, earning him the FIFA Puskás Award. In January 2018, Arsenal agreed to sell Giroud to Chelsea. The English club paid £16 million for the French striker. By the time he left Arsenal, Giroud had made 252 appearances and scored 105 goals. In February 2018, Giroud made his debut for Chelsea in a match against West Bromwich. After receiving a pass from Giroud, teammate Eden Hazard scored a goal. The team's head coach was pleased with Giroud's performance. Giroud scored his first goal for Chelsea in February in an FA Cup match against Hull City, and in March, he became a tournament winner with the team. Luck continued to favor Giroud as he won the UEFA Europa League in the 2018/2019 season with Chelsea, becoming the tournament's top scorer with 11 goals.

In December 2020, in an away match of the UEFA Champions League group stage, Giroud scored four goals against Sevilla, making him the first player in Chelsea history to achieve such a feat in the tournament format. Giroud also scored six goals in a single edition of the UEFA Champions League in the 2020–2021 season, with his sixth goal against Atletico Madrid being a superb overhead kick. In the final, Chelsea defeated Manchester City and Giroud became champions with the team. Despite his goalscoring prowess, the British club decided not to renew Giroud's contract in 2021. There were rumours in the press that Russian clubs Spartak Moscow and Dynamo Moscow were interested in the player, but Giroud's agent Michael Manuello denied these speculations in an interview. According to Corriere dello Sport, Italian club AC Milan have offered Giroud a two-year contract. The transfer fee, according to Transfermarkt, was €4 million. In mid-summer, the striker joined the Rossoneri and made his debut for the club a month later in a match against Sampdoria. Giroud scored his first goals for Milan against Cagliari, netting a brace in that match.

French team

In 2011, Giroud was expected to be called up to the French national team. He scored his first goal for the country in his third match. It was no surprise that a year later he was included in the squad for Euro 2012, where he played three games. At Euro 2016, Giroud scored the first goal for the French national team against Romania. In the match against Germany, he provided on-field support to teammate Antoine Griezmann, who became the star of the tournament. In total, Giroud made six appearances in the tournament, scoring three goals and providing two assists.

In March 2018, in a friendly match against Colombia, Giroud scored his 30th goal for the national team, placing him among the seven top scorers in the history of the French national team. However, this could not save the French from defeat as Colombia won 3–2. In the match against the United States, Giroud collided with defender Matt Miazga and had to leave the field in the 57th minute due to a head injury. The match ended in a draw. In the summer of 2018, Giroud participated in the FIFA World Cup in Russia as part of the French national team. Croatia, who reached the World Cup final for the first time, lost to France by a score of 4–2 on 15 July 2018 at the Luzhniki Stadium. Giroud did not score a goal in the tournament.

In 2021, after a friendly match between the French national team and Bulgaria, a conflict arose between Giroud and his teammate Kylian Mbappé. Giroud told the press that he was not satisfied with Mbappé's reaction to his passes. Mbappé said that he would have preferred to discuss these issues in person, but at the same time, Giroud believed that this slight misunderstanding should not affect the results of the national team.

In 2011, Olivier married his longtime girlfriend Jennifer. Two years later, they welcomed a daughter into the world. The happy parents named their child Jade. Among fans, Giroud's marriage was considered one of the strongest, but this changed in 2014. In addition to his impressive physical qualities (height 1,93 m and weight 88 kg) and sporting achievements, the footballer became known thanks to a scandal that almost destroyed his personal life and career. The press learned that before the match against Crystal Palace, a woman came to the athlete's hotel room. The identity of the beauty was not a mystery.

The footballer's mistress turned out to be lingerie model Celia Kay. Caught in the act, Olivier Giroud has long denied the affair. However, The Sun newspaper published photos in which the footballer and the model were undressed. Olivier had no choice but to publicly admit his own guilt. He temporarily sat on the bench and began to attend couples therapy sessions to save his marriage. In 2016, Jennifer Giroud, after overcoming a difficult period with her husband, gave birth to their son Evan. Olivier is now the father of several children, since in 2018 and 2020 he welcomed a son and a daughter named Aaron and Aria. The free time that the striker has, which is not abundant in his life, is devoted to his family or participation in charity activities. Olivier shares the important events of his life on his Twitter and Instagram accounts (Instagram is banned in Russia because it belongs to Meta Corporation, recognized as extremist in Russia).
